Elderly driver hurt after vehicle hits pole

Emergency medical staff report a 74-year-old man who was in a vehicle that struck a pole after he fell backward inside the vehicle. He did not hit his head and did not lose consciousness, and the airbags did not deploy. They believe he injured his chest, with visible swelling on the left side and abnormal movement in one area of the chest when he breathes. His breathing sounds are present on both sides, but his breathing pattern makes it hard to get an accurate reading. His oxygen level improved after being given supplemental oxygen. He is wearing a neck collar because of his age, and he reports no significant medical history or regular medications. He is being taken to Eskenazi Hospital as a trauma patient for further evaluation of the chest injury.
